Mets tell Yoenis Cespedes to chill on golfing while on disabled list

De Aza started in center field after the Mets put slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes on the disabled list and De Aza made the defensive play of the night. But Alderson admitted the team perhaps made a mistake by not sidelining him quicker after suffering the injury July 8.

The MLB Network’s Kevin Millar uploaded a picture of himself with Cespedes after a round of golf on Wednesday afternoon, hours before Cespedes would leave a game in the ninth inning after the quad issue flared up.

In reality, Cespedes may have played golf 10 times in the past couple of weeks, a team official said. “I don’t care about perception”.

Severino followed and allowed only one hit and an unearned run in 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and a walk, getting the win in the Yankees’ 9-5 victory. “Our doctors have told us that probably had no impact on the injury, positive or negative, but let’s face it, to play golf during the day and then go out injured in the evening, it’s a bad visual”.

Whether it’s to blame or not, Cespedes’ golf habit has now put Collins in an uncomfortable spot multiple times. He has got to listen to the club that’s paying him $27.5 million this season, certainly, but giving up an innocuous hobby over “bad optics” alone seems kind of silly. “You look at what he’s done with runners in scoring position, and we need that right now”, Mets manager Terry Collins said of Bruce. Collins said the team wanted to let the injury “quiet down” before resuming baseball activities.

“We’re going to have to grin and bear it for the moment”, Alderson said. A-Rod is in a 2-for-28 rut, is hitting.204 and has started once since July 22.

Rodriguez, 41, is a lifetime.442 hitter with eight homers against Colon, 43.

Bruce belted a three-run homer for his first hit as a Met, ending an 0-for-10 skid since his deadline acquisition from the Reds with a towering shot to right-center in a four-run fifth inning against Yanks starter Nate Eovaldi. “Those numbers are from a long time ago”, Joe Girardi said.

Gary Sanchez started at DH for the Yankees and doubled and singled.

Dropped in May after starting 0-6, Severino was banished to the minor leagues for two months.

WHITE SOX: Rookie shortstop Tim Anderson left in the first inning of Thursday’s 6-3 win over the Tigers with a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch.

An MRI revealed Cespedes, who was traded by the Tigers to the Mets last season in the deal that netted Michael Fulmer, did no further damage by playing through the injury.
