Mets’ trade reversal mostly about money

It’s a level of emotion rarely seen in regular-season sport.

The Milwaukee Brewers have traded outfielder Carlos Gomez to the New York Mets in exchange for infielder Wilmer Flores and pitcher Zack Wheeler. Of course, it’s certainly possible that Flores asked to stay in the game after learning of the impending deal, which is why he stayed in.

In Price they get a proven veteran and high-level starter to bolster a team with a powerful offense. “They’ve kind of been in this situation before and didn’t make these type of moves. It’s a little odd that Wilmer’s still in the game”. News circulating about the trade led Mets fans to celebrate that they were re-acquiring a player they had traded years ago.

Flores got a standing ovation prior to his final at-bat in the seventh inning and appeared to be crying as he played the field in the eighth. He wiped his nose and upper lip on his glove, and at one point, took off his cap and wiped both eyes on his sleeves. “Moves are exciting this time of year”. “In the last month I’ve played every day”, Gomez said Thursday afternoon. He also said because of the late night, he had so many names spinning in his head that he mistakenly referred to manager Craig Counsell and told people, “We traded Counsell and Fiers to Houston” instead of Gomez. The only known fact is that it seems the New York Mets are out of the picture, but it shouldn’t be hard for the Milwaukee Brewers to deal an All-Star outfielder making only $9 million next year.

Zack Wheeler, a former top prospect who is out for the 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery, is on his way to the MIlwaukee Brewers. Scott Boras, Gomez’s agent, blasted the rumors regarding his client’s health.

“To be politically correct, there’s a lot of BS out there”, Collins said during an instant-classic, eight-minute press conference. “The kid comes off the field tonight”.

What that narrative misses is that if you’re asking for a king’s ransom in a trade, it doesn’t matter how many times you hear “no” as long as you hear “yes” once. “What happened yesterday, I think it’s in the past now”. Carlos Gomez plays baseball because he enjoys playing baseball.

After the Flores debacle, Collins told everyone to remember that his players are not “stone-cold robots”. It shows that he’s so focused on the game that he isn’t listening to anyone unless it’s about what’s going on in the field.

“Everybody’s got a telephone. I know that”. It’s entirely likely we’ll all look back on Wednesday night as the moment things really unraveled. “I walk in, and there’s no deal, OK?”

But the hero of the story, in a way, is Terry Collins. While telling him this, he had no idea that Flores was reportedly traded.

“To who? For what?” “I feel awful for Wilmer”. What’s next? Flying the team charter to the Sahara to see if the players can survive with canteens of Gatorade and a few packets of dill pickle sunflower seeds? I’m sorry he’s upset.

“Her mom is right here with her, but she has go back to the Dominican, and we are still waiting on the birth certificate and the passport so they can come with me to Houston”, he said. They fell two games behind Washington in the NL East.
