Somehow Penn met with Guzman and interviewed him in Mexico while he was on the lam. El Chapo has been recaptured and returned to prison but Penn’s interview has been published in Rolling Stone Magazine.

Before the interview came to light, two USA law enforcement officials had said tracking of cell phones and electronic exchanges of people close to him led to his recapture. Mexican officials launched extradition proceedings January 10, in what could be a lengthy process.
Reportedly, Penn spoke to Chapo in the Mexican jungle.
The anonymous official said Guzman went to Los Mochis in part because he was “very interested” in meeting 43-year-old del Castillo again, although a second meeting did not take place.
The actress, who has her own tequila brand, added: “I’ll bring my tequila to share it with you, because it is a dream that I wanted to fulfill”.
DVDs of the show were found in the house that marines raided in Los Mochis.

El Chapo was pinched on Friday, six months after he broke out of the maximum security prison near Mexico City that’s holding him now.
Guzman is regularly being moved to new cells in different floors and a guard is posted in front of it 24 hours per day to prevent him getting away once more.
At one point, Guzman – who is reportedly married to former beauty queen Emma Coronel, and has had children with her and several other women – writes “My mother wants to meet you”.
The drug lord wanted to make a film about himself but “would entrust its telling only to Kate”, Penn wrote.
Guzman’s escape was an embarrassment for President Enrique Pena Nieto.
“We investigate actions, we don’t investigate people”, Sanchez said as quoted by the Associated Press. Mexican authorities said they captured Guzman partly because his representatives contacted filmmakers and actors about making his biopic.
Whether Penn is liable or not hinges on intent, legal experts say.
Asked whether Penn or del Castillo were under investigation, Gomez said a “new line” of inquiry had been opened that could include them or Guzman’s lawyers, and could involve “covering up” for Guzman “or something bigger”. The article revealed that the actor traveled to Mexico to interview the drug lord in October, while Guzman was on the run from Mexican authorities after escaping prison.

Federal prosecutors in six states have filed indictments against Guzman, but the Eastern District of NY and the Southern District of Florida have overlapping cases that could be combined, and the headquarter sites of Brooklyn and Miami have emerged as the leading contenders for the sensational trial.
