Mexico’s Jalisco state prosecutors’ office said 18-year-old Ethan Couch and his mother, Tonya Couch, were located and detained Monday evening in the Pacific Coast resort city of Puerto Vallarta. “They would have had to enter, for example, as tourists, but they entered without registering”.
Couch and his mother’s disappearance triggered a nationwide manhunt involving U.S. Marshals and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He said the two did not register when entering Mexico, but it was not clear where they came in. As part of his probation he could not drive, drink alcohol or use drugs.
During his trial, a psychologist testifying in his defense said the teen suffered from “affluenza” due to his privileged upbringing.
His lawyers argued that his parents should share some of the blame for the crash. The condition is not recognized as a medical diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association.
Anderson said an arrest warrant was being issued for Couch’s mother, Tonya Couch, on charges of hindering an apprehension, a third-degree felony that carries a sentence of two to 10 years in prison.
