The effigies traditionally represent Judas Iscariot, the disciple of Jesus who betrayed his boss – but in the modern day, they’re usually modelled on unpopular politicians.

Mexico celebrated Easter in the traditional way last night, by stuffing effigies of Donald Trump with fireworks and burning them.
An effigy of the Republican presidential front-runner will hang in a public square in Mexico during the Easter weekend, the Guardian reported Friday, so Mexicans can burn the sculpture as part of their holiday celebration. In addition to his disparaging comments about Mexicans, Trump has promised to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and force Mexico to pay for its construction, a proposal that has not endeared him to many Mexicans.
Mexico City-An effigy of USA presidential contender Donald Trump – a hated figure for many in Mexico – was set ablaze late Saturday in a contemporary twist on a Holy Week ritual.
Ever year Leonardo Linares, a craftsman in Mexico City, makes a papier mache “Judas” figure depicting a local politician, to be burned in a public square in the city.
This year he made likenesses of the devil, President Enrique Pena Nieto, Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and Trump – all of which went up in flames.
Effigies of the billionaire property tycoon were reportedly set on fire across the country, including in Mexico City, Puebla and Monterrey.
Trump wasn’t the only despised figure burned during celebrations held across Mexico. He’s accused Mexican immigrants of being pimps, rapists and drug-runners, and has promised to increase visa fees and reinforce all border crossings to help pay for a wall, which critics claim will be largely ineffective.
