Jalisco Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer told journalists that one of Guzman’s sons, 29-year-old Alfredo, was among six people abducted by armed men from an upscale eatery in the heart of the Pacific resort town early on Monday (August 15).

Mr Almaguer said the rival Jalisco New Generation drug cartel – which dominates the region – was suspected of being behind the kidnapping.

El Chapo is now in a maximum security federal prison in the northern Mexico city of Ciudad Juarez after staging an audacious escape through a mile-long tunnel in July 2015.

He is now in a maximum security federal prison in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez and fighting extradition to the United States.

Mexican officials say they presume the kingpin’s son was among those kidnapped.

But, despite his blood ties, Ivan Archivaldo was said to be making enemies within his father’s cartel, too.

“The subjects enter, control the diners, separate the women to a side and violently take them [the men]”, he said in an interview with The Associated Press before the news conference. In June, local media said an armed gang broke into the home of Guzman’s mother and stole vehicles and other goods. In 2009, he was indicted on USA drug trafficking charges in Chicago along with his father and other Sinaloa cartel leaders.

One of the men kidnapped from the restaurant is a relative of a retired army captain who served as a bodyguard for former Jalisco Gov. Emilio Gonzalez Marquez.

But the kidnappers didn’t just grab any ole drug lord’s son, they apparently captured the son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Experts agree that rivals need to gather information about the family’s movements.
