Guzman’s lawyers has 3 days to present arguments against extradition and twenty days to present supporting evidence, beyond the many other appeals they have already started filing.

Guzman narrowly escaped under a blaze of bullets but the raid, in the northern state of Durango, was a major breakthrough in the hunt.

The head of the Sinaloa Cartel, who was recaptured Friday, was keen to have his life story told.

Officials at the attorney general’s office were not immediately available for comment on the article. El Chapo has tried to cultivate a Robin Hood persona for the region of Mexico he controls.

Mexican authorities have attributed more than 30,000 deaths to Guzman’s drug reign. “Drug trafficking? That’s false”.

But Sean Penn’s interview with Guzman has attracted some criticism, with White House Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough saying some revelations drawn from the piece were “maddening”.
