Hurricane Earl drenches the coast of Belize and Honduras in the Caribbean as it now threatens Mexico and Guatemala with torrential rains.

Currently, hurricane warnings are in place up to Punta Allen, Mexico, though Cancun and Cozumel are excluded.
The hurricane’s heavy rains ‘could cause flash floods and mudslides especially over higher terrain, ‘ Belize’s National Emergency Management Organization said in a bulletin just before it arrived. It had sustained winds reaching 75 miles per hour and can generate torrential rainfall that can lead to catastrophic flooding and mudslides.
Belize opened shelters across the country and cautioned residents to move to higher ground, especially in low-lying areas.
The Cayman Islands Joint Marine Unit also issued a warning Monday, saying boaters should stay off the water while the system passes through the area.
Officials ordered the worldwide airport in Belize City to close, as well as archaeological reserves and national parks.
It was centered about 40 miles east of Belize City and moving west at 15 mph. The Belize Tourism Board announced that cruise ship calls had been canceled for this week.
That graduated it from a tropical storm into a hurricane ranking the first category on a five-point scale.

“We know this is something we’re not going to have to deal with”, Davis said. “The outer bands are upon us, so the conditions atmospherically are deteriorating which means that from here on we are actually in a hurricane setting”.
At least nine people were killed earlier this week as the storm hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic, according to BBC.
