Dramatic video of the raid to capture drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman has been unveiled, as questions rise about U.S. involvement in the arrest. There are of course the indictment charges against him by at least seven USA federal district courts, but it is especially the fear of another escape which is making the United States jittery.
DEA officials said in a tweet that the capture of El Chapo is “further evidence of our two countries’ resolve to ensure justice is served for families who have been plagued by his ruthless acts”. Guzman and his security chief travelled several blocks through the meter-tall storm sewer before popping out in the middle of an intersection.
El Chapo apprehended following shootout in home state of SinaloaFive people died in gun battle at the home located in the seaside city of Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa.
As the troops prepared to go upstairs, one marine saw a man at the top of the stairs preparing to fire a rocket-propelled grenade.
The extradition bid comes as new details about Guzman’s surprise meeting with Sean Penn in October emerged, with a newspaper publishing pictures showing that the United States actor was monitored by the authorities.
The Mexican government, however, is investigating both Penn and Kate del Castillo, the actress who arranged Penn’s meeting with Guzman, about their meeting with El Chapo. The newspaper said the photos were part of a Mexican government intelligence file it had obtained.
– Business is booming for Los Angeles based clothing retailer Barabas after two of its shirts were seen on notorious Mexican drug king pin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman while he was interviewed by actor Sean Penn.
Penn’s article about his meeting with Guzman, who has twice escaped from Mexican maximum security prisons, appeared late Saturday on the website of Rolling Stone magazine.
Responding to an Associated Press query asking if he was concerned about the publication of images purporting to show Mexican officials observing him during his visit Penn said: “I’ve got nothin’ to hide”.
LOS MOCHIS, Mexico (AP) – At 4:40 a.m.in a central neighborhood of the Pacific coast city of Los Mochis, 17 Mexican marines began their assault on a safe house, thinking there was a good chance Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was inside.
Guzman’s escape humiliated President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration, which had balked at extraditing him even though the kingpin had already fled from another prison in 2001. But he was captured in a vehicle on the highway.
“It’s a lie, absurd speculation from Mr Penn”, Juan Pablo Badillo, one of a team of Guzman lawyers, told Reuters newsagency in an interview on Wednesday. “I think he’s going to be brought back to Chicago”.
Penn wrote that Guzman was interested in having a movie filmed on his life and wanted Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, who had portrayed a drug trafficker in a television series, involved in the project.

Carlos Barragan y Salvatierra, a professor of law at Mexico’s National University, said there would be little ground to prosecute Penn or Del Castillo, unless money or gifts changed hands.
