“Our message to the world will be this: you can not obtain legal status or become a citizen of the United States by illegally entering our country”, he said in a speech in Phoenix as he laid out a 10-point plan to crack down on illegal immigration.

Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric on illegal immigration has obscured a potentially historic policy shift. “Can’t do it”, said Trump on Wednesday. Because he was apparently furious that Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto just posted a tweet insisting that his country would never, under any circumstances, pay for the wall.

Some of Donald Trump’s Hispanic backers distanced themselves from the Republican nominee on Thursday for standing by a hardline approach to illegal immigration in a key speech after indicating for weeks that he may soften his approach.

Then he added, ‘Our greatest compassion will be for the American citizen’.

But the businessman, trailing Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in opinion polls, did back away from earlier promises to deport immediately the 11 million immigrants in the United States illegally and said he would prioritize those with criminal records.

Trump, speaking at the American Legion’s annual convention in Cincinnati, says he wants to work with the group to ensure that the children learn about America’s common values.

Trump has sparked anger in Mexico with accusations on the campaign trail that the country sends rapists and drug runners to the United States, as well as his threats to tear up trade deals and make Mexico fund his planned wall. “Mexico will be paying for the wall”.

As for why the Mexican president would want to meet with someone who appears to be hostile toward the country, Davidow believes Pena Nieto wanted to get Mexico’s side out to the American public.

But the real conflict started when the pair took a few questions from the press and Trump said that his infamous border wall was discussed, yet he said they didn’t discuss who would pay for it.

Critics have painted Trump’s plans as either unrealistic or impossible, and have said his immigration policies will harm the US economy. “We’ve got a lot of people in this country that you can’t have, and those people we’ll get out”.
