The woman, who is over 60 years old, recently returned to Philadelphia from her travels.
Health officials say there is no reason to suggest the patient got Zika in Chicago.
Doctors at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital on the city’s North Side announced at 11 a.m. Monday that a woman tested positive for the virus.
Luskin Hawk said anyone traveling to an area with a Zika should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites, including using mosquito repellent whenever they’re outside.
The number of infections has gone up by 28 since last week, including by five pregnant women, the secretariat noted. This is the fifth known case in IL, but the first one in Chicago. There have been reports of a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly in babies of mothers who had Zika virus while pregnant.
Zika outbreaks have been reported across much of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
“Because of the potential for congenital Zika infection, pregnant women should strongly consider canceling or postponing travel to areas with ongoing outbreaks of infection”, Philadelphia’s health commissioner, Thomas Farley, said in a statement.

Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. There have been several dozen cases of the mosquito-spread virus reported in the United States, most in travelers returning from affected countries. Medical authorities say most people recover in about a week from symptoms such as fever, rash and joint pain.
