The Mexican peso is higher by 1.4%, at 20.9218 per dollar, as of 1:37 p.m. ET after the Washington Post reported that US President Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto had an hour-long phone conversation. Trump said in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday evening that Mexico would eventually reimburse the United States for the wall.
It was Trump’s wall, however, that received the maximum attention as he tried to bully the country’s much smaller neighbour into paying for it, with a mix of petulance and bravado.
Spicer told pool reporters the plan “clearly provides the funding [for the wall] and does so in a way that the American taxpayer is wholly respected”.
“As someone who represents a district on the Texas / Mexico border, I think it’s un-American”, Blanco said. And Mr. Trump himself had been critical of the adjustment tax, saying it was too complicated.
Mr Pena Nieto is under growing pressure to cancel a scheduled meeting with Mr Trump in Washington next week.
In a video address to the Mexican people on Wednesday night, Mr Peña Nieto said he regretted and condemned the decision.
“We’re going to restore the rule of law in the United States”, President Trump said during a speech at the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday.
While the canceled meeting was the direct result of Trump’s challenge, the administration said it wants to maintain communications with its southern neighbor.

He also plans to review whether to resume the once-secret “black site” detention programme; keep open the prison at Guantanamo Bay; and designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation.
Trump made building a wall one of his top promises during the presidential campaign.
A spokesperson for Chipotle, which buys many of its avocados from Mexico, said the company was not prepared to speculate on how a border tax could impact its restaurants.
For decades Latinos have streamed north across the border seeking a better life for themselves and their children.
The timing caused outrage in Mexico, with prominent politicians and many on social media seeing at as a deliberate snub to the government’s efforts to engage with Trump, who has for months used Mexico as a political punching bag.

Others have begun to chime in on the wall controversy, including Mexican football star Rafael Marquez. First, he could present the figures to Mexico and use the threat of withdrawal of the aid as leverage to compel some sort of payment for the wall.
