MI governor offers Flint aid instead of Congress testimony

The emergency will prompt Gov. Rick Snyder to propose another $195 million in aid in his annual budget proposal on Wednesday, including $25 million to potentially replace old lead and copper pipes.

There is no record of the City Council voting to specifically use the Flint River as the short-term solution, but a state-appointed emergency manager who oversaw the switch to that water source blames the decision on the council. For months, local officials failed to notify residents about the lead – and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency failed to step in. “We don’t need some one time gimmick”.

The governor and his agency heads who caused the sudden appearance of lead and other toxics in the water that the families of Flint drank and showered in for a year and a half are even more disgusting than the water itself. “And that’s what draws us to this is to get these people their answers”, said Andy Arena, the lead investigator who once led Detroit’s Federal Bureau of Investigation office.

For DPS, Snyder asked for an immediate $50 million to enable the state’s largest public school system to continue paying employees and vendors.

Another facility in Flint, helping with the distribution of water in the city is the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. “All lead pipes need to be replaced”.

“The email seems to reflect someone summarizing a discussion at a meeting, and we are unsure what actually was said there”, Snyder Press Secretary Dave Murray told MLive.

Rick Snyder Thursday denied claims made by Hillary Clinton during her concession speech in New Hampshire that he “poisoned people to save money” in Flint, Michigan, replying that her statement was “not accurate”.

The Michigan National Guard, state police and hundreds of volunteers have been distributing water testing kits, water filters and bottled water to residents. Big money and special interests do not stand a chance if voters use their power at the ballot box, demand better candidates, and get involved in politics and government bodies.

Flint officials and others have questioned what Snyder knew and when he knew it. Snyder announced the outbreak last month, saying he’d just learned of it. On Friday, Harvey Hollins III, who runs the governor’s office of Urban and Metropolitan Initiatives, told the Free Press that he learned of the Legionnaires’ problem in March 2015 but didn’t alert Snyder because there wasn’t enough information on it. Wisconsin now requires environmental investigations at a level of 15 micrograms per deciliter or higher.
”This common-sense bill makes sure our children are safe”, Taylor said. Melissa Mays, a Flint mother, talked about how the lead levels in her children were increasing.

Others, such as Dr Yanna Lambrinidou, president of Parents for Nontoxic Alternatives, called Flint, and a similar outbreak in Washington DC years earlier, “communities in the coalmine”.

Snyder is also seeking $72 million annually over 10 years to fund a plan to split DPS into an operating entity and a debt-paying entity. “So, I didn’t select that – I’d rather go for tuna fish, or ground turkey, because I’m more apt to eat that myself”, Kerr says.

Governor Rick Snyder presents the budget to the combined House and Senate Appropriations committees in the Capitol in Lansing Mich. on Wednesday Feb 10 2016. The budget contains special funding for Flint's water problems and Detroit Public Schools. (D
