MI State surprises Ohio State

The goal at the beginning of the year for MSU was to earn a berth in the College Football Playoffs.

The junior questioned the coaching staff’s play calling after the Buckeyes managed only 132 total yards in a loss that ended their 23-game overall and 30-game Big Ten winning streaks.

Other games of effect included Florida, who had an outside shot of making it should the Gators beat Alabama in the SEC championship, barely beating Florida Atlantic in overtime. But we tried inside/outside and they beat us at the line of scrimmage and we were unable to execute in the throw game.

No coincidence, Ohio State won all of those games.

Do you get the feeling things on the Ohio State campus are a bit rocky following a 17-14 loss to their rival MI State on Saturday? Football is a vertical game and the Buckeyes somehow forgot that Saturday and it cost them.

“Connor came up to us and said: ‘Be confident, ‘ ” Terry recalled. MI State coach Mark Dantonio was an assistant at Ohio State under Jim Tressel (2001-03), winning the BCS national championship in 2002…. “How we lost, I just feel like we weren’t put in the right opportunity to win this game, we weren’t put in the right situations to win this game”, Elliott said.

Jones later tweeted “Lol everyone always wanna take our tweets and run with them, infer what you want, this season is FAR from over”. It took nearly a whole season to figure out what everyone had suspected, that this Ohio State team wasn’t as good as advertised. Only Nebraska stands between them and entry to the conference title game as an undefeated team. Didn’t look that way on Saturday. The come-from-behind Cotton Bowl win over No. 5 Baylor? Ezekiel Elliott blasted the play calling. He finished with just 33 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in the defeat.

He also noted it was the inappropriate time to say that he would not return to school next fall.

That’s why they were double-digit underdogs to The Ohio State Buckeyes. Their Playoff hopes are grim thanks to the Spartans.

Just as important as the result in Norman, Oklahoma, on Saturday night was the status of Sooners star quarterback Baker Mayfield, who sat out the second half with an apparent head injury.

ESPN’s Todd McShay ranks Elliott as the No. 1 running back prospect and CBS Sports does as well.

It was a win nonetheless – Oklahoma’s sixth in a row since its inexplicable loss to Texas. Probably the Sooners, who finish the season against Oklahoma State.

“I’m disappointed. I’m disappointed in the play calling, I’m disappointed in the situations we were put in and I wish it all played out differently”, Elliott told reporters after the game, adding that the loss of the defending national champions felt like a “bad dream”.

That being the case, it’s puzzling why Ohio State abandoned the pass. The rain was a factor in the first half, but was not as much in the second half. Would the committee put them in the Playoff?
