Miami Beach Zika zone triples

Florida health officials say those are the only areas where mosquitoes have been actively transmitting the Zika virus.

“We are relieved that there have not been any additional cases of locally transmitted Zika in Wynwood during the past 45 days and are hopeful that the CDC will soon remove its travel advisory for the area”, Albert Garcia, vice chairman of the Wynwood Business Improvement District, said in a statement Sunday. “Once again, we must take all reasonable and safe action to eliminate this”.

Florida health officials now have reported 650 travel-related infections, 86 infections involving pregnant women and 77 cases of Zika contracted within the state.

Scott said the department has identified five people – two men and three women – in the expanded area who showed symptoms within one month of each other. Zika infection during pregnancy can lead to serious birth defects, and the virus has also been linked to an increase in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Agency spokeswoman Nancy Grantham said the numbers are low, considering Florida sprayed about 338,000 pounds of naled on about 6 million acres in 2014.

The only beekeeper registered in Miami Beach, attorney Darius Asly, said he’s still concerned about the government’s handling of the fight against Zika.

In Los Angeles County, where 73 people have been infected, most are Latinos who visited family in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, all countries that have been affected by Zika outbreaks, said Dr. Benjamin Schwartz, deputy chief of the acute communicable disease control program for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

It brings the total of nontravel-related Zika cases in Miami Beach to 35. The target area remains the South Beach portion of the zone, from 8th to 28th streets, from the ocean to Biscayne Bay.

On Friday, Gimenez said there were no plans to expand aerial spraying into the new transmission zone. “We’re getting sprayed whether we want to or not”. The Carillon Resort had lost $100,000 in short-term cancellations.

Congressional aides told The Associated Press on Thursday that an impasse over Zika funding for clinics affiliated with Planned Parenthood was nearing an end, but the measure won’t be unveiled until next week.

“Zika is non-partisan and I have been very clear that something had to get done this week”, Scott said in a news release, after he attended meetings in Washington this week urging lawmakers to act.
