But even after this years dismal start, Ross said, the decision to fire Philbin was hard. “I felt this was the best opportunity we have” in naming Campbell the coach. Being aggressive. You know the mindset that we attack each and every game or in every day we attack every day. I think we’ve been blessed to be part of an organization where things have gone well for a long period of time. “But we can’t wait”. 500 since he became coach in 2012.

The bottom line here is that interim coach Dan Campbell is going to have turn things around quickly, which is exactly what he plans on doing. According to Campbell, there wasn’t enough competition during Miami’s preparation and that spilled over into the field.

Deep player dissatisfaction with Coyle and his system stretches back to the 2014 season, when a late-season defensive collapse caused the Dolphins to miss the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year.

He added, “We have plenty of talent.

“We have to change the culture”, Ross said. Miami doesn’t have to go undefeated the rest of the way, but the team does have to show up and actually be competitive unlike Thursday night’s debacle in Cincinnati. “It doesn’t work that way”.

Meanwhile, Ryan Mallett has retained his spot as Houston’s starting quarterback for now, despite his lackluster performance in the Texans’ 48-21 loss to Atlanta on Sunday. Miami has been outscored 91-48 during that stretch.

The Miami Dolphins slumped to 1-3 in the regular season after losing 27-14 to the New York Jets in front of a packed crowd at Wembley Stadium in London. Other scout team defensive players then joined in and were aggressively going after the first-string offense, despite Philbin’s request that they ease up.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel was the first media outlet to break the story, reporting that Philbin would be fired even though the coach told reporters after meeting with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross that he considered his job secure.

Saunders was the Raiders’ offensive coordinator in 2011 and spent the last three years as a senior offensive assistant in Oakland.

The Dolphins have struggled on both sides of the football this season. Doubts only grew this season regarding Philbin’s inability to motivate players with his passive demeanour. Matt Cassel started 15 games after Tom Brady’s knee injury in 2008, and Drew Bledsoe started in Belichick’s first season.
