Miami Dolphins Place Transition Tag on Olivier Vernon

Vernon, 25, was a third-round pick by the Dolphins in 2012 and really came into his own as an all-around defender this season. The Dolphins have the right to match any contract Vernon is offered, but it’s no sure bet they will.

For defensive ends, the difference between the transition tag ($12.734 million) and franchise tag ($15.701 million) is nearly $3 million dollars.

The tagging over Vernon does not mean that he will stay in Miami. The transition tag is $12.7 million.

With the transition tag now in place, the Dolphins cannot hope for a best case scenario of trading Vernon. If it’s not, after all, they could simply match the offer and finish up the negotiations that way. But there are no guarantees that another team will sign Vernon to a lucrative offer sheet that Miami wouldn’t be willing to match.

This former University of Miami standout deserves everything that’s coming to him because of the hard work and productivity (29 sacks in four years) he’d had in his National Football League career.

On Tuesday morning, the Dolphins placed their transition tag on Vernon. Part of the problem with losing an impact player such as Vernon is the adverse effect it has on those around him. It will very interesting to keep an eye on Vernon to see if he gets any interest from teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have a lot of money to spend.
