Miami falls to Washington State 20-14 in snowy Sun Bowl
Falk connected with Gabe Marks on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 1:10 before half, and Erik Powell’s second field goal put Washington State up 20-7 at halftime. The first game of that streak also was in the Independence Bowl in 1993, when the Hokies beat in 45-20. The Miami coaching changes, yet another soap opera season, that climaxed with the rout at the hands of Clemson, the worst loss (58-0) in the history of the Hurricanes program, makes this game more fun for interim coach Scott than that for Leach.

Washington State led Miami 20-7 at the half and held on to win by six despite being shut out in the second half.
The offense wasn’t dynamic by any stretch, but the Hurricanes were moving the ball pretty well in the fourth quarter. Nobody scored in the third quarter, and it wasn’t until Braxton Berrios reeled off a 60 yard run early in the fourth quarter that Miami seemed to awake from its hibernation.
First the Hurricanes had a potential game-tying touchdown – on a 5-yard pass from Brad Kaaya to Stacy Coley – negated by a block-in-the-back penalty on Herb Waters. CB Marcellus Pippins ended Miami’s previous drive by recovering a fumble inside WSU’s 5-yard line.
With the Hurricanes just a couple days out from Saturday’s Sun Bowl matchup against Washington State, they want to make sure they’re ready to make one final splash before the 2015 season comes to an end.
Nebraska 37, UCLA 29: SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Tommy Armstrong Jr. threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score to lead Nebraska (6-7) and provide a happy ending to coach Mike Riley’s first season. Then the Cougars took it away in the second, limiting UM to minus-13 rushing yards and just 21 total yards in 13 plays. That’s right, Yearby took the toss from Kaaya and threw a last-minute interception.
While Miami is sixth in the nation with a +1.2 turnover margin (+1.3 in its last three games), Washington State is 74th with a -0.1 turnover margin (-1.3 in its last three games).
Washington State had the blustery wind at its back in the second quarter and capitalized.
Nick Smith had three field goals for Marshall (10-3), including a 32-yarder with 1:44 to play that was part of a 13-play, 80-yard march that lasted 6:35.
Longtime Georgia coach Mark Richt, a former Miami quarterback, was hired in late November and is tasked with restoring the program to its former glory after a decade of mediocrity. Amusing thing is, running back wasn’t even his best position but that’s where Crawford was needed.
The Hurricanes responded with two more stops and twice forced the Cougars (9-5) to punt.
The Miami players were rumored to have been openly disappointed in this bowl invitation.
What’s at stake: Both teams are looking to end long bowl droughts. – Miami WR Rashawn Scott had a rocky day, but caught five passes for 75 yards. Washington State registered four sacks against a Miami team that had yielded 15 all year.

Nick Mullens threw touchdowns passes of 56 and 27 yards by Michael Thomas for Southern Miss (9-5), and Ito Smith added 1- and 2-yard scoring runs.
