Miami Hurricanes crumble under Washington State Cougars, 20-14

EL PASO, Texas — Teams playing in the Sun Bowl in recent seasons often have brought long bowl droughts with them and left them at the border, and this years game between Miami and Washington State will add to that trend. The under is 4-0 in Cougars last 4 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points and the Cougars are 6-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record while going 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.

The Mountaineers – wrongly – tried to remind everybody that the last time Clemson was in the Orange Bowl it didn’t work out. Coker fired a ideal 50-yard strike to Ridley, who outfought safety Demetrious Cox to come down with the ball at the 1.

But WSU’s hallmark explosive offense was dormant throughout the second half of Saturday’s game, turning a potentially dominant win into a squeaker. Luke Falk’s passing ability was second to none with 4,266 yards with 36 touchdowns and eight INT’s on almost 71%.

When she came out of the life-saving surgery, she learned that her sister Cookie, who had been battling lung cancer, had died. There were reports that she’d been hospitalized last month, but somehow we’d thought she’d find a way to pull through again.

The Hurricanes responded with two more stops and twice forced the Cougars (9-5) to punt.

Police to Use Verbal Skills, Tasers
The two sides eventually settled on million, an amount approved by the city council shortly after Emanuel won a second term. The number of Tasers under the new effort will double to 1,400, Emanuel said, so that every squad vehicle should have one.

Even if I were writing this from a Hurricanes point of view, I’d have to think Washington State has the advantage, however slight, in this game. The Hurricanes were in the red zone two drives later and Walton got the ball again, though it’s worth pointing out his carry came two plays after the Hurricanes had a touchdown called back for a block in the back.

It was that kind of day, though it felt a bit warmer for the Cougars’ fans and players as they celebrated a 20-14 win over the Hurricanes. But for the Hurricanes, Saturday’s Sun Bowl might as well have been played in Antarctica. Miami is No. 64 in pass defense, allowing 223.8 yards per game, and cornerback Artie Burns leads the ACC with six interceptions.

Washington State, on the other hand, is a program very much on the rise. Yearby rolled right as if on a sweep and pulled up to throw, but the pass slipped out of his hand, going end over end, and was intercepted by Shalom Lunai. A shaky offensive line had its share of moments too, giving up four sacks and barely giving Kaaya time to operate.

Moving to the victor’s side, per Jessamyn McIntyre of ESPN 710, Leach said things were “sloppy on both sides, but says the Cougs played gritty”.

The fluke play was, at that point, just Kaaya’s seventh interception in his last 578 attempts. It started with a tour of the Close Combat Tactical Training Center, where the players got the chance to get up close and personal with military vehicles like Abrams tanks and Bradley vehicles. On the next series, the Cougars used a 14-play drive to get Powell’s first field goal and a 10-7 lead. 11 different Cougars caught passes.

Washington 41, Southern Miss 31: At Dallas, Myles Gaskin broke a third-quarter tie with an 86-yard run and had a season-high 181 yards and four touchdowns.

Washington State had the blustery wind at its back in the second quarter and capitalized. Cracraft made three catches on third or fourth downs to extend drives, finishing the day with five catches for 63 yards.

My hats off to interim head coach Larry Scott for an admirable showing, having his team continue to fight game after game after the firing of Al Golden. The one concern for this bowl game is that Leach and Faulk are dealing with injuries to the receiving corps, with the biggest concern being the health of top receiver Gabe Marks (ankle).
