“I can understand why the (Marlins) game is cancelled, for very good reason”. Many considered him one of the sport’s top pitchers.

Officer Lorenzo Veloz with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat at 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near Government Cut. The team confirmed the news on Sunday morning.
The destroyed boat was eventually towed away.
On Sept. 25, 2016, the baseball player Jose Fernandez died in a boating accident.
City of Miami Fire-Rescue workers were seen carrying bodies, draped and on stretchers, at the Coast Guard station after sunrise Sunday. Officials later said they were taken to the medical examiner’s office.
Reyes said eight divers entered the water to look for possible survivors.
Two other men, whose names have not been released, were killed in the crash.
“It appears they were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty”, Reyes said. None of the three were wearing life vests, Velos said. He added that he has personally stopped the boat in the past for safety checks in the area.
“We’ve got a veteran team. but you tend to forget, particularly people kind of watching from a distance, that these guys who do super-human things for three hours a day are just human beings and are just people”.
The 24-year-old pitcher was drafted in 2011 by the Marlins and was in the majors by 2013 when he won the National League’s Rookie of the Year award.
Fernandez defected from Cuba in 2008 after three prior attempts that were unsuccessful. “You don’t want to think it’s real”, said DeSclafani. “I knew he was a good dude, obviously, (when) he gave me a smile back and said “I did (catch it).’ Something I will always remember”. I can’t imagine what they feel”. On behalf of the Mets organization and certainly all of the players and coaches, we’re all saddened by the news.
Fernandez, a star right-handed pitcher, was initially scheduled to start in the Sunday game, but the start was pushed to Monday so Adam Conley, returning from the disabled list, could start. This season likely ends with Fernandez leading the National League in strikeouts per nine innings pitched with 12.5.
Players gathered at Marlins Park to grieve together. “Hopefully we can all get through this and ‘rest in peace.’ That’s all I can say”.
“He was unbelievably talented, a gregarious, vivacious person that you’d want to go and watch play baseball”, Reds manager Bryan Price said.
Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias, who is from Havana, Cuba, was removed from the lineup Sunday after learning of Fernandez’s death.
