Fernandez, 24, the great Miami Marlins starting pitcher, was killed early Sunday morning in a boating accident in Miami.

Officials say the 32-foot center console boat was coming into Miami Harbor in the darkness when it slammed into a jetty and overturned.
Cuba’s state-controlled media made no mention of Fernandez’s death on Sunday, a standard practice for those who left the island-nation surreptitiously, even since its communist government restored diplomatic relations with the United States a year ago.
Cuba’s state-controlled media made no mention of Fernandez’s death on Sunday, a standard practice for those who left the island-nation surreptitiously, even since its communist government restored diplomatic relations with the United States past year.
He was drafted by the Marlins in 2011 at 20 years old and named National League Rookie of the Year in 2013.
Before the Orioles took the field at Camden Yards for their final regular-season home game Sunday afternoon, players sat at their lockers and their eyes were locked on the clubhouse television sets, where details about the death of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez were being broadcast.
“Our thoughts and prayer are with his family at this very hard time”, the statement read.
After allowing only one run in six solid innings against the Nationals at Marlins Park in July of 2013, Fernandez lost his mind with excitement in the dugout after Giancarlo Stanton tied the game with a leadoff home run in the ninth inning. “It does appear to be that they were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty, and the accident happened”.
In emigrating from a communist country to emerge as an elite pitcher in the United States, Fernandez became the embodiment of the American Dream, offers Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. “Jose is a member of this family for all time”.
His mother was crying after watching videos of Fernandez.
Mattingly struggled to speak at the news conference: “I see such a little boy in the way he played”. Two other people died. “Kids play Little League, that’s the joy Jose played with”.
Lorenzo Veloz of the fish commission said the boat was found upside down.
Fernandez, a star right-handed pitcher, was initially scheduled to start in the Sunday game, but the start was pushed to Monday so Adam Conley, returning from the disabled list, could start. Two victims were found dead under the boat, one was found dead in the water.
“When the first pitch left his hand, the first thought was ‘Oh, wow, this is something special, ‘” Collins said.

“But we’ll get through it, because we have to”, he said.
