Perhaps the greatest Cuban pitcher of all time was killed at 24 years old in a boating accident early Sunday morning.

The memories came immediately for Reds pitching coach Ted Power when he heard of the boat accident that took the life of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez on Sunday morning.

HollywoodLifers, our thoughts are with Jose’s family during this hard time.

That game, against the Atlanta Braves, has been cancelled.

He became a two-time All-Star and the 2013 National League rookie of the year.

“You know what, I was supposed to hit a home run in my second at-bat”, Ortiz said at the time with a laugh.

The already short-handed New York Mets saw their playoff chances dealt another significant blow when left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his scheduled start Friday because of shoulder soreness. I was like, ‘Dog, you don’t throw me any fastballs.’ He was like, ‘Why would I throw you fastballs?’ And we just started laughing.

“When you think about Jose, watching him out there pitch, it’s just devastating”, Wilmer Flores added. We’ve got to discuss that later.

The owner of the Miami Marlins says he is feeling the “deepest sorrow” over the death of Jose Fernandez. Fernandez was leading the majors in FIP this season, at 2.29, giving him a valid stake in the discussion of the very best pitchers in the game. One was in the water and the other two men who were his friends were under the boat.

The Miami Dolphins said they would have a moment of silence before their game in nearby Miami Gardens on Sunday afternoon to remember Fernandez.

“I’m still in shock”, former Marlins player Gaby Sanchez said on Twitter. A few fans milled about, even though the game was canceled. “My heart goes out to his family”.

“I don’t know how that would change the game”, he said. As noted, the players and front office believe Jose would have wanted them to go out and play baseball. He said that the general feeling of the clubhouse was that if Fernandez were here, he would want them to get out and play on Monday. I tell people all the time we like beer and pizza too and we’re subject to the same things that everyone else is.
