Miami Schools Take Steps To Protect Returning Students From Zika

Officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services say Texas has had 122 reported cases of Zika virus disease.

The woman developed a rash after returning from Mexico and underwent two tests that both tested positive for the virus, said Weber-Morgan Health Department spokeswoman Lori Buttars.

Starting Monday, 7,600 kids in Miami-Dade County will be attending school inside of one of the Zika zones – there are now two in the county. Five people have been confirmed to have contracted the virus at South Beach.

“Put it in perspective, we have 36 cases, we have 20.6 million people that live in our state, weve probably had 65 million tourists come to our state this year, ” Scott said. The CDC also issued an unprecedented warning to pregnant women and their partners to avoid the area. And Zika is not just a risk to pregnant women and fetuses.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said. Through Thursday, 479 travel related cases of Zika have been discovered in Florida with 35 additional cases being non-travel related.

The virus is transmitted mainly by mosquitoes but recent information from global public health authorities has confirmed that the disease can also be transmitted sexually.

Though Mississippi provides an environment where the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, those that can transmit Zika, can thrive, the breed of mosquitoes hasn’t been detected in the state since the early 1990s.

Harry Reid of Nevada said in a statement Friday that the transmission of Zika in Miami Beach was the most alarming development yet, and the threat to the country’s health and economy has never been greater. They were urged to have kids wear long trousers and longer sleeves, and to apply insect repellent before they leave home.

Most Zika victims exhibit mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, Haley said. “You want good information”, he said.

And Honein warns the projected number of infants affected does not paint the entire Zika picture – the virus is also linked to a number of other devastating birth defects, including various brain abnormalities, limb joint deformities, club foot, deafness, and eye abnormalities.
