Miami students in Zika zone can’t bring repellant to school
“We join the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in urging pregnant women to avoid travel to areas with known Zika transmission”.

But the pregnant woman, along with two other men, did not have clear ties to the Wynwood neighborhood, and officials do not know where they were bitten by a mosquito carrying Zika virus. The latest stats place over 1,800 cases of Zika in the USA, including the recent confirmation of 46 infected people in IL. Just this afternoon, we learned there is one more case of Zika virus not related to travel in South Florida.
There is no vaccine available for the virus so far, but researchers are working to develop one that could be ready for public distribution in 2017.
The Texas case is the first time that a baby born with microcephaly linked to Zika has died in the United States, the Rare Disease Report noted.
Many people infected with Zika will have no symptoms or mild symptoms that last several days to a week.
The Zika virus is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is present in the San Joaquin Valley. “An infected mosquito can then transmit the virus to other people”.
The national attention and a CDC travel advisory, recommending pregnant women avoid the area, is backfiring on business owners.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 1,825 cases of Zika through August 5, including 322 cases in Florida. Georgia health leaders say they are closely monitoring mosquitoes to try and prevent local transmissions. Researchers have yet to determine how effectively that mosquito can transmit Zika in this climate.
The state Department of Health still believes active transmissions are only happening within a one-square-mile area in the Wynwood arts district in North Miami.

In April, Governor Scott Walker approved the addition of nine project positions in DPH to help with the response and prevention of outbreaks, including Elizabethkingia anophelis and also in anticipation of the presence of Zika. While the majority of the cases have been caused because of traveling to affected areas, two of the cases from Broward County have been caused locally.
