Miami to be without Carter, Jenkins for Sun Bowl
Despite being shut out on the scoreboard in the second half of Saturday’s bowl game against Miami, the Cougars did enough offensively in a big second quarter and rode their defense the rest of the way to edge the Hurricanes 20-14.

ABOUT MIAMI (8-4, 5-3 ACC): Kaaya was hampered by an inconsistent rushing attack that ranks 116th in the nation but still threw for 3,019 yards with 15 touchdowns and gives 2016 coach Mark Richt a dependable quarterback around whom to build.
The snow began to fall in the second quarter, the sky over the Franklin Mountains turning considerably whiter as the University of Miami’s season got considerably darker.
Washington State led 20-7 at the half and looked in total control, limiting Miami to three total first downs over the second and third quarters.
Two of those drives ended in turnovers – one on a fumble at the 5 that might have been affected by the slick conditions and the other on what has to be considered one of the worst play calls of the year: a halfback pass for an interception.
Both teams scored on their opening possessions, with Falk hooking up with Jamal Morrow on a 31-yard touchdown pass.
2- Two efficient, productive 6-4 sophomore quarterbacks face off when Miami’s Brad Kaaya meets Luke Falk of the Cougars.
More important, the Cougars improved to 7-5 all-time in bowl games, and 2-0 all-time in Sun Bowls. Braxton Berrios’ 60-yard end-around run out of a wildcat formation set up Mark Walton’ 5-yard scoring run that cut it to 20-14 with 13:10 left.
He is not expected to retain many, if any, members of Miami’s current staff, including offensive coordinator James Coley and defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio, neither of whom would comment on their futures last week.
Washington State (8-4), which is in a bowl game for the second time in three years under coach Mike Leach, hasn’t won in the postseason since 2003. Morrow ran 10 times for 71 yards and caught five passes for 50 yards and the TD. “He’s as talented as anybody in our conference, and we see some good ones, so it will be a major, major challenge for us and we obviously have to play extremely well to give ourselves a chance”. Falk leads the No. 1 passing offense in the nation, averaging 397 yards.
Kaaya, who missed 1 1/2 games with a concussion in midseason, has thrown for at least 3,000 yards in two straight years while connecting for 41 touchdowns with 16 interceptions (12 as a freshman). But instead of kicking the field goal on fourth-and-goal from the 4, the Hurricanes went for the conversion and came up big with Stacy Coley catching a 4-yard pass from Brad Kaaya to tie the score at 7-7.
Everett Golson is not with Florida State for its Peach Bowl game against Houston.
“It was weird, wild and snowy, but that was just fine with Washington State”.
Prediction: Not sure how much motivation the hurricanes have going into this game knowing this era of Miami football is about to come to an end.
Miami Hurricanes rank at 65 for scoring 28.9 points where as Washington State Cougars rank at 82 for allowing 28.8 scores. “He can throw guys open – you feel like you have a guy covered and he’s still going to put it in a spot where you’re not going to make a play”, Grinch said. WSU QB Luke Falk’s 38 touchdown passes are a school record…. The Cougars won 12 games combined in his first three seasons before jumping up to nine this year after the bowl victory.
