Despite the Mets’ success this season, the franchise has been without Wright since April 14 after he exited a game in the eighth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies with a hamstring injury. It’s unclear at this point how many rehab contests he’ll need before being activated.

New York Mets captain and third baseman David Wright will start his minor league rehab assignments Monday beginning with Class A St. Lucie. Still, there is no question that Wright has the potential to be the player he was in 2012-his last completely healthy season-when he hit. 333 with one home run and four RBIs.

With the Mets now tearing the cover off the ball suddenly, if Wright can get back into the lineup he’d provide a pretty solid cog in the middle of that lineup with Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda. Having Wright come back could be a blessing or a curse for a Mets team that is gelling right now. Nobody can predict the player that Wright will be this season or for the rest of his career with the spinal stenosis, and that could affect the Mets moving forward.
