Michael O’Reilly Admits Taking Banned Substance

O’Reilly underwent a random test conducted by Sport Ireland prior to flying out to Brazil with the rest of the boxing team, and was informed of the test results on August 4.

O’Reilly originally appealed against the ruling, but a statement handed to RTE on Tuesday revealed that the pugilist unintentionally took a supplement which may have contained a banned substance.

He said he was given the supplement by someone “unrelated to his team or association” and has apologised to his team-mates.

He was suspended, and will not now contest that decision.

But he had had discipline problems in the past and was one of two Irish boxers fined and sent home from the European Olympic qualifying tournament in May for breaking team rules.

The OCI added that is has recommended to the IOC and the committee that “if any wrongdoing is discovered on the part of any ATR in this affair then its status as an ATR be reviewed both for Rio 2016 and future Games”. The Olympic Council of Ireland will be making arrangements for him to return to Ireland as soon as possible.

“The boxer Michael O’Reilly, from Ireland, in the evening of August 9, withdrew from the Olympics”, said an official statement.

“The IABA is fully committed to the Irish Anti-Doping Rules”.

THG Sports said Kevin Mallon should be released after he was detained by police last Friday as they seized about 1,000 tickets for the games, including some allocated to the Olympic Council of Ireland.
