The 31-year-old swimmer competed with the US team – which included Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller, and Nathan Adrian – during the 4×100-meter medley relay.
Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, officially announced his retirement from swimming during a Monday morning interview with Today. Twenty-six of those medals are gold. The victory earned Team USA its 1,000 gold medal.
“The biggest thing between now and London was that I was more emotional during these games and that showed on camera”, Phelps added.
“That is my home, that’s where I grew up, that’s where I learned how to swim”, said Phelps. “I had my goals in the water, but one of those goals was also just to have fun, and I couldn’t have asked for a better time here with my teammates. I want to help these guys as much as I can”.
“We are in great shape, not only with Katie but with the team that we have now, ” Phelps said moments before Ledecky’s interview. “I won’t. I’ll be there watching, cheering people on”.
