Michael Phelps beaten by 21-year-old Joseph Schooling

To underscore the United States’ status as the Olympics undisputed superpower, at the current rate of winning medals (going back to 2000) it will take nearly a century and 21 more Summer Games for the next nation to reach the 1,000 gold plateau, with China finally hitting the mark in 2100.

Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to win a gold medal for the United States in an individual swimming event after she finished alongside Canada’s Penny Oleksiak in a time of 52.70 seconds.

Phelps shares this medal with Chad Le Clos of South Africa and László Cseh of Hungary.

Which is to say: there could be more iconic Michael Phelps moments, and more iconic Michael Phelps tattoos, on their way.

Phelps’ final event of the 2016 Rio Olympics – the 4x100m medley relay – will take place on Saturday, August 13.

“I think I used too much energy in the front half and that kind of hurt me towards the end”.

Joseph Schooling of Singapore won the gold.

He came in with a time of 1:54:66 seconds. They all touched in 51.14.

“I had a pretty good start, at the first 25m I was pretty far ahead, I just couldn’t finish as well as I would have liked, we’ll see how that goes”.

” All my hard work has paid off and I am really happy about it”. Together, they own the top 10 fastest times in the event.

Schooling and Quah had made history earlier in the day when both qualified for the semi-finals, marking the first time Singapore has had more than one swimmer in the semi-finals of the same Olympic event.

Phelps, 31, has had an impressive run at the Rio Olympics this year.

“I probably wouldn’t be the swimmer I am today if it wasn’t for Michael because we bring out the best of each other”, said Lochte, who grew up in Daytona Beach and swam at Florida.
