Rio de Janeiro, August 14 (IANS) Michael Phelps won his fifth gold of the Rio Olympics and his 23rd overall as he powered the U.S. team to a win in the 4×100-meter medley relay on Saturday night in what he said was the final race of his career.

Michael Phelps is ending his Olympic career with 23 gold medals.

Simone Manuel became the first African-American to win gold.

Here’s what other had to say on the micro blogging site, Twitter.

“This is over. This is it”, Phelps said in a Facebook Live event Saturday. “She does swimming, not track and field, so I’m not anxious about that”. Justin Rose of Britain is the third-round leader and will be trying to win golf’s first gold medal in 112 years.

Connor Jaeger gave the USA another silver in the 1,500 free, leaving the Americans with 33 swimming medals in Rio – matching the highest total since the boycotted Los Angeles Games in 1984.

Hint: 205 countries are now competing in Rio, and others, like the Soviet Union, have disappeared along the way. “You add up the next four and they barely have more than we do”. Germany wouldn’t get there until 2204. In London in 2012, he surpassed the previous record holder of the modern games, Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won 18 medals, including 9 golds, from 1956-1964. But he tested positive for ephedrine, which was part of his asthma medication, and stripped of the medal days later along with a chance to compete in a 1,500-meter event.

Standing atop the medal podium for the 23rd time, Michael Phelps teared up, bit his lip and gave a little nod. In 2001, the USOC recognized DeMont for his achievements and said it was bringing him “back into the Olympic family”.

But the athletes saw something that the results didn’t show. So the gold remains awarded to Bradford Cooper of Australia.

“Everything in life happens for a specific reason”. “I don’t carry it with me”.

Later Sunday, Andy Murray tries to become the first man to win two singles gold medals in tennis and at track, a showdown in the 400 final pits LaShawn Merritt, Kirani James and Wayde van Niekerk.

Officially, here’s the count from that Olympics for the USA: 79 golds (it had been 78 until recently, when one medal that was counted as being won by a mixed-nationality team was added to the US total because five of the six members were Americans, along with one Austrian), 78 silver and 79 bronze – 236 medals in all.

“There is no wrong or right”, Mallon said. They lasted almost five months, had a marathoner disqualified for using a vehicle on the route, saw gymnast George Eyser win six medals despite having a wooden leg and featured events such as dumbbells and tug-of-war. “A lot of people have been saying I couldn’t do it but I took over half a second off it”.

You might not know about them, since they don’t count. Adrian pulled away and brought home the relay victory by 1.29 seconds in an Olympic record time of 3:27.95.

There were 78 events and medals were awarded; there even was a true opening ceremony.

There are several factors that go into the success of the US program, starting with some simple numbers.

The men’s 4×100 victory came just minutes after the women’s medley relay gave the United States its 1,000th Olympic gold medal at the Summer Games.
