Michael Phelps breaks 2000-year-old Olympic record
“This medal is not just for me, it’s for a whole bunch of people who came before me and have been an inspiration for me”, Manuel said through joyful tears.

Phelps led from Pereira and Lochte at the final turn and powered on as the other two faded, opening the way for Hagino and Wang to grab the two other medals. Speaking of gold, the USA continues to rack up plenty of medals, with 38 total after Day Six on Thursday.
As close as it gets: Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal in Beijing in a miracle come-from-behind finish that could be said to be his greatest race.
Much is made of Phelps’ remarkable medal haul and his constant domination of his own sport, not to mention the numerous world records he’s broken.
In three previous Olympics, with Phelps winning Gold, Lochte has won two Silvers and a Bronze.
Michael Phelps has smashed every record in the modern Olympics, that historians have began to compare the American swimmer to stars of the ancient Olympic Games.
On Friday he will compete in the final of the 100m butterfly and he is also expected to take part in the 4x100m medley relay.
Kosuke Hagino of Japan was second, nearly 2 seconds behind Phelps.
“I think that this win helps bring hope and change to some of the issues that are going on in the world”, Manuel said. The last dead-heat for gold in swimming at the Olympics was in Sydney in 2000. “We’ll have one more time to hop in the pool and duke it out”. I’m happy to help diversify swimming but hope for the day when it’s not “Simone the black swimmer” because that means I’m not supposed to win gold medals or set records.
Phelps has won the medley in each of the past four Games and hasn’t lost in the event at the highest level since his debut in Athens in 2004. As a kid I wanted to do something that no one had ever done before and I’m enjoying it. Murphy finished in 1:53.62, a third of a second ahead of Australia’s Mitchell Larkin.
“Doing the hundred back and having a good time in that helped me to realize that I could do better in the 200 back than I did at trials”.

“Things started hitting me this morning”, he said.
