Michael Phelps gets another gold, but says it is the last

“I’m exhausted about hearing how the Americans are doing here”, said Clary, according to the Washington Post.

“Getting off the bus and walking into the pool tonight, I nearly felt myself starting to cry”.

Nathan Adrian, Cody Miller and Ryan Murphy joined Phelps for his last race.

Michael Phelps, 31, has confirmed his retirement.

Phelps, who swam the butterfly leg of the race, stayed cool to outduel Guy and give Adrian the lead heading into the anchor leg, however, and the freestyle double bronze medalist held his nerve to come home and extend the Americans’ stranglehold over the event. He initially retired after the 2012 London Olympics, only to decide about a year later to return.

Earlier the United States also won the women’s 4x100m medley relay-the country’s 1,000th gold medal in Olympic competition according to the US Olympic Committee.

Despite four gold medals and two silvers, Phelps was “haunted” by knowing he failed to prepare as he could have and particularly stung by the loss of the 200m butterfly title he surrendered to Chad le Clos.

Vollmer teamed up with backstroker Kathleen Baker, breaststroker Lilly King and freestyle sprinter Simone Manuel to claim victory in Saturday’s race in three minutes 53.13 seconds.

Simone Manuel of the USA earned another medal in the pool, this one a silver in the women’s 50-meter freestyle.

It was the sixth consecutive occasion that the U.S. and Australia have occupied the first two places in the event at the Olympic Games. It ensured that with the USA relay victory Saturday, Phelps’ gold-medal total would stand at 23, likely for all time.

The U.S. women’s fencing team took the bronze, making team member Ibtihaj (IHB’-tih-haj) Muhammad the first American medalist to compete wearing a hijab.

Even with a hugely disappointing performance by Franklin, who didn’t even make it to the final of her two individual events, the Americans still blew everyone away. Zagunis and Muhammad were both knocked out in the round of 16. “It’s a lot to think about, 24 years in the sport and we’re finishing up tonight”. “We had a team that had a serious chance of winning a medal but we have to accept that we were fifth and use that in the future”.

Later, after the team received its gold medals, Gaines noted that Phelps’ mother really wanted to go to Rio de Janeiro.

The country’s first medal dates back to 1896, when James Connolly won triple jump gold. Puerto Rico, a territory of the US, has fielded teams in the Summer Olympics since 1948, and this was the first medal, of any variety, for a woman representing Puerto Rico. When then 6-year-old Michael Phelps saw bottles of Gatorade in the grocery store, he would grasp one, just as Jordan did in the commercial, to see how his hand measured up. “It’s insane. This is how I wanted to finish my career”. I am hanging with other athletes.

Other Puerto Rican tennis players have won Olympic titles before.

Phelps has won more than twice as many golds as any other Olympian.

There will no doubt be long celebrations, including for her pet dog.

“That was nice to see, actually”, said Bowman, adding that in the past he would have counseled Phelps not to bask in the moment but to “build the fire up in you while you’re hearing the national anthem”.
