Swimming is richer because of him, and will be poorer without him. The 41-year-old captured silver on the vault in Beijing in 2008. “I wanted kids to dare to dream, and that’s just what Joe did”.

Congrats to Schooling for an awesome victory-and to Phelps for remaining graceful after a still-incredible silver three-way tie. “Being Michael required such isolation”, Ervin observed.

The youthful looking Schooling might be unknown to the rest of the world, but in swimming circles he has solid credentials.

Georgia finished the Games with one gold and one silver for Allison Schmitt; one gold each for Smoliga, Melanie Margalis and Gunnar Bentz; one silver for Chase Kalisz; and one bronze each for Van Landeghem, Brittany MacLean and Amanda Weir.

Michael Phelps slaps the water as he celebrates his win in the men’s 100-meter butterfly final at the the USA swimming nationals, Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, in San Antonio. In London, she swam this relay with Rebecca Soni, Allison Schmitt, and Bonnie Franklin. He has the school’s mascot and the words “Come and take it” tattooed on his left shoulder blade.

In the pool, the focus was on Phelps’s final race, the 4×100-meter medley relay. At a meeting with the female athletes on the eve of the games, he told them about the Homestead Act, the 1862 law that encouraged America’s westward migration by providing free land to settlers.

In a live video published on his Facebook page in which he answered fan questions, Phelps officially confirmed that he will not be returning to compete in the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.

Ricky Fung wasted no time in commemorating Phelps’ famous meme with a little ink on his right leg.

Even his lone silver – to Singapore sensation Joseph Schooling in the 100m fly – carried a whiff of the extraordinary: it was a rare three-way tie with le Clos and Phelps’ longtime Hungarian rival Laszlo Cseh.

“I try not to think about the history much”, Ledecky said. “A real roller coaster ride and a real fun one, too”.

Blume had never previously claimed an Olympic medal, despite winning three world championship titles. But we’ll also keep an eye on 2012 silver medalist Australia, which had a decent qualifying round at fifth. It just feels good to know the hard work did paid off.

Phelps said in 2012 he was retiring but he came back for one last hurrah after feeling he wanted to bow out on his own terms. “I’ve been able to watch him grow and turn into the swimmer that he is”.

Bolt turned the Olympic Stadium into his stage again for his first race at the Rio Games, cruising to an easy win in his 100-meter heat, backed up by the trademark showmanship to the thrill of the crowd. So, they’re draining the larger pool to transfer almost 1 million gallons from a nearby practice pool. He’ll have to give back $150,000 USA to the National Sports Association for future training and development.

“He doesn’t cry very often and I don’t cry very often”, Ledecky said. “I hope it shows that people from the smallest countries in the world can do extraordinary things”.

With these achievements, he will be a shoo-in for Singapore’s sporting Hall of Fame, and crowned Singapore’s greatest-ever sportsman. “Getting off the bus walking into the pool tonight, I pretty much felt myself starting to cry. Were the papers here, I’d sign them tomorrow”.
