“This is a race I really wanted tonight”, Phelps said. The 200 IM is one of two races that Phelps can win for the fourth straight time, along with the still-to-come 100 butterfly.

Lochte, a year older, has 12 Olympic medals, six of them gold, and the 200 IM is his only individual event in Rio after taking gold alongside Phelps in Tuesday’s 4×200 freestyle relay.

Majestically seizing two more golds, Phelps was the buzz of the Games on Tuesday – even more than the speculation over why the water in the Olympic diving pool turned mysteriously green overnight.

Lochte has dominated this event as well, winning the world championships in 2013 and 2015.

Olympic roommates Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte maintain a relaxed vibe at the athletes’ village.

The heartwarming father-son moment was captured by a slew of press photographers, something Phelps said he was thankful for in the whirlwind of Olympic competition.

Until now, Balandin’s biggest achievement was winning three breaststroke gold medals at the 2014 Asian Games.

He is the most decorated Olympian in history, and while this may be his last Olympics, he has given fans enough memories to last a lifetime.

Anchoring a team that included Allison Schmitt, Leah Smith and Maya DiRado, the Americans trailed behind Australia for most of the race.

‘I wanted to be with him more, ‘ he added.

‘It hurt a little bit, but with a good rest this afternoon think I’ll be fine, ‘ he said.

On the sixth night of swimming in Rio de Janeiro, the Campbell sisters seek the same golden prize in the women’s 100 freestyle. Bronte is the reigning world champion, but Cate is the world-record holder.
