Michael Phelps looks to avenge London silver in 200m butterfly

Ledecky already won her first gold in the women’s 400m freestyle on Sunday night, and will look to add the second of potentially three individual gold medals to her haul in the women’s 200m freestyle final.

Seventy-five minutes after racing, he was back in the water to swim the final leg of the 4×200 freestyle after Conor Dwyer, Townley Haas and Ryan Lochte had built a lead of 1.76 seconds. The team has had two disappointing draws and fans are booing them – and superstar Neymar – when they take the field. Ledecky, 19 is often called the future of American swimming; Phelps has sometimes been seen as part of its past. “I tried to not really pay attention”.

Consider this: The margin between the US and the Chinese in qualifiers was greater than the margin between China and 12th-place Belgium.

The next day Phelps responded with the fastest time since his 100m butterfly winning swim at the London 2012 Games. Great Britain finished second to claim silver, while Japan claimed bronze.

The semifinal wasn’t anything special, as Phelps came in second and Le Clos came in third. A teammate helped him find a replacement.

“When I was on the block, I honestly thought my heart was going to explode out of my chest”, Phelps said.

Speaking of records, Phelps will likely take his medal count to heights that may never be reached by the time he’s done in Rio. And she admitted that the effort took a toll.

“It’s only a semi”, Ledecky said.

“It’s the closest I’ve come to throwing up at the end of a race”. She and Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom are viewed as the favorites in the 200 free final. “There are a lot of things I could say”. “I couldn’t have gone any faster, it’s impossible”.

Le Clos, who clocked 1:52.96 for gold in 2012, could only manage a 1:54.06.

But after his win in the butterfly, new wrinkles emerged.

Few could blame him after a hard night’s work – but while Phelps may be cooling down, Ledecky is only just getting started. After a brief delay, he put on a riveting race, finishing with a time of 1:53.36. This is the story of former rivals, turned friends, turned bitter rivals.

Hosszu, nicknamed the “Iron Lady” could add another gold to her tally when she competed in the 200-meter backstroke.

These final first-place wins brought his gold-medal total to a whopping 18, cementing his status as the most decorated Olympic athlete. An hour later, New Zealand tries to get some momentum back with a match against Great Britain.
