Phelps and le Clos have a lot of history between them.

Perhaps the most celebrated name in swimming and decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps will look to enter the Olympic waters for the last time in his career in the games village at Rio.

Ledecky took the most challenging step toward a feat that’s only been done one other time, holding off Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to win the 200 freestyle and give the American star her second gold of the games.

A big round purple bruise on his right shoulder, US swimmer Michael Phelps emerged from the pool in his qualifying heat for the 200-metre butterfly on Monday feeling the aches and the toll of late-night races in his fifth Olympics.

Hungary’s 19-year-old Tamas Kenderesi surpassed his veteran teammate Cseh to clinch a superb bronze medal in 1:53.62, with Le Clos fading to fourth, more than a half-a-body length behind Phelps in a time of 1:54.06.

Ledecky already owns two medals and one world record in Rio.

Phelps was second, but surprisingly after his fast start, Le Clos was outside the top three.

Great Britain won the silver medal and Japan took bronze.

Despite Sakai’s late and unexpected surge, Phelps clung on for a record-extending gold and his 24th Olympic medal in all. This event, which Ledecky began swimming at the worldwide level only last summer, figured to offer the most resistance in her attempt to match Meyer’s feat.

In a 2015 interview with NBC Sports’ OlympicTalk, Spitz said he predicted he would get “run over” by Phelps’ success.

Le Clos, who recently announced that that both of his parents are battling cancer, went out with a totally different strategy. I have no emotion when I race.

The Hungarian known as the “Iron Lady” earned her third gold medal of these games with a victory in the 200 individual medley.

Chinese swimmer Sun Yang won gold in the men’s 200m freestyle. Harsh words have been directed as athletes such as Yulina Efimova and Sun Yang, who previously served doping suspensions. It breaks what sport is meant to be and that’s what pisses me off.
