Michael Phelps strikes gold twice

United States’ Michael Phelps celebrates as his team wins the gold medal in the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle final during the swimming competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, but at least I was able to make it to Rio.

“That’s a lot of medals”, grinned the American.

Still, Phelps was not done, putting the gloss on a fourth straight American victory in the 4x200m free, cruising home nearly two and a half seconds ahead of Britain’s James Guy in the swimming equivalent of baseball’s home-run trot around the bases. It’s a record book that dates back to Leonidas of Rhodes some 2,168 years ago.

With that win, LeDecky is well on her way to being the first swimmer to win the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter freestyle in the same Olympics since Debbie Meyer in 1968, if she can hold on to her title in the 800 this time around.

He’s facing off against a reborn Phelps who came out of retirement after two highly-publicized DUI’s and a stint in rehab. Lewis closed out with a Super Bowl victory. “It’s good to see he’s awake”.

Conor Dwyer, Ryan Lochte, Townley Haas and Phelps won the 4×200 freestyle relay, with Phelps as the anchor. “It’s always fun getting in the water and racing him, he’s tough, he finished on me last time really well”, Phelps said about the upcoming final race.

“You’re going to bring tears to my eyes now”, Phelps told NBC’s Michelle Tafoya of the touching moment after a preliminary race in the 200m individual medley on Wednesday. Those of us from Baltimore know exactly what happened there. Allison Schmitt, competing in what is likely the final event of her career, clearly earned one of them with a blistering split time of 1:55.95. Last year, he also posted a picture on the photo sharing app, Instagram, showing fellow Olympian Allison Schmitt doing the treatment for him which he captioned, “Thanks for my cupping today!” Cierra Runge was the slowest of the group, 1:57.75.

“My leg in particular, it wasn’t the best I’ve ever had”, Lochte said, according to the Charlotte Observer. If that’s including me, then that’s what I want. They’re not competing against each other for air time or for the public’s attention, largely because Lochte’s only swimming two events here.

American Michael Phelps holds off Chad le Clos of South Africa in the 200-meter butterfly final. Phelps has a record 25 career medals 21 of them gold
