Michelle Obama and Bernie Sanders hold highlight speeches at DNC

While her dress was understandably overshadowed by the speech Obama delivered – which effectively eviscerated Republican nominee Donald Trump without ever mentioning his name – make no mistake: her decision to wear a Christian Siriano design was likely a measured one. “I thought she did a very good job”.

The Democratic National Convention kicked off in Philadelphia yesterday with important speeches from Bernie Sanders, Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren, and Demi Lovato. “No, in this election and every election is about who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives”, she said amid cheers and applause.

From the moment that began with flashbacks to past speeches about her husband and their two daughters who are the heart of their hearts and the center of their world, we re-connected with these national leaders who have, on many occasions, reminded us that they were once ordinary people and ordinary Chicagoans.

Tuesday’s convention events drew sharp contrast with Trump, with several speakers discussing Clinton’s life-long fights to make a difference. United States women got the right to vote in 1920 after ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

Sam Kass, a close friend of the Obamas who served as the family’s personal chef for six years and as the White House senior adviser for nutrition policy, said that Mrs. Obama had learned from Mrs. Clinton’s experience as a spouse living in the spotlight. Couldn’t be more proud & our country has been blessed to have her as FLOTUS. I.

Even Trump, who has an insult ready for any Democrat who crosses his path, had only nice things to say. Sanders sent urgent messages to supporters asking them not to protest.

The Democratic convention has been convulsed by revelations over leaked Democratic National Committee emails that showed party bias against Sanders.

Clinton on Tuesday became the first woman to win the presidential nomination of a major U.S. political party, teeing up a November showdown with Donald Trump.

He said Hillary had been a political activist since the couple’s early days as law students together.

With his last State of the Union address behind him, Obama’s speech in Philadelphia will be one of his final opportunities to define and defend his tenure with a massive audience watching.

“There’s no unity in the party”, she said of the Clinton camp.

“What I admire most about Hillary is that she never buckles under pressure”.

She added that the election would also determine who will give hope to the next generation, or instill fear, and made clear who she was backing.

“More voters may be voting against something than voting for it”.

In a nod to disgruntled Bernie Sanders supporters, Obama noted Clinton’s loss to her husband in 2008. Delegates weighed in with repeated chants of “Lock her up”.

Bill Clinton’s speech struck a unifying tone. “Cartoons are two-dimensional, they’re easy to absorb. Life in the real world is complicated and real change is hard, and a lot of people even think it’s boring”. “You are the living, breathing proof that the American Dream endures in our time”, Obama said.

The Democratic convention did not get off to a smooth start on Monday.

“My husband, who I’m gonna put in charge of revitalizing the economy because, you know, he knows how to do it”, Hillary Clinton said.

She spoke along similar lines in her commencement address at City College in NY this past June, describing the feeling of living “in a house that was built by slaves” and watching her daughters head off to school each day, “waving goodbye to their father, the President of the United States, the son of a man from Kenya who came here to American – to America for the same reasons as many of you: To get an education and improve his prospects in life”.
