Michigan gets 6 rushing TDs in 49-10 rout of Penn St

Like Hill, they flourished under Harbaugh in the coachs first season in Ann Arbor.

Stingy red zone: Opponents have not had tremendous scoring success against MI, which leads the country in third-down defense (10.5 percent).

Rutgers (2-2, 0-1) tied the game early in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Chris Laviano to Patton. Godin’s sack, however, was only the start of the defensive onslaught. That left the Penn State defense helpless against Michigan’s running game and short passes.

The defense did some work in the second half. Nittany Lions LB Brandon Smith is expected to make his first start, stepping up for a team that has lost all three starting LBs to injuries.

After the game and to his credit, coach Mark Dantonio supported his players asserting their right to protest. “Our guys were there and swarming”. “We gotta make sure we come out with six points every time, especially playing tough times like that – we gotta come out with six. I thought it was impressive”.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been through something like this or seen something like this”, Franklin said of his depleted linebacker depth chart. We’re all on the same page. I think this is something. In the matches we lost this year, we give points away in bunches.

Biegel said the Badgers will take that mentality to No. 4 MI this weekend.

Former Gov. Mifflin standout Jan Johnson was listed as Penn State’s third-team middle linebacker at the beginning of the week.

Before kickoff, Penn State’s three starting linebackers knelt in the corner of a Michigan Stadium end zone and prayed. Going five-for-five on Michigan’s first possession, Speight’s shots were pointed and precise. “They are understanding what is going on in our society”.

“We are all ready”, Farmer said, “because we got the worst possible situation today”.

The Nittany Lions tried to follow suit, going for it at fourth-and-five on the MI 42-yard line.

The Lions further had a miserable time on third down, going 2-for-12, against a MI defense with all-Americans at multiple positions. After missing the first three games of the season with an undisclosed injury, MI senior CB Jourdan Lewis made his first start of the season.

Capitalizing on the run game, MI began to pound the ball downfield.

Barkley posted a career-high 77 yards receiving on five receptions and rushed for 59 yards on 15 carries.

This isn’t writing off the 2016 season, after No. 4 MI pounded the Lions 49-10 in Ann Arbor, nor is it to say Trace McSorley isn’t the guy or that the program is sunk at linebacker without recruits.

Safety Malik Golden led Penn State with a career high 11 tackles, including eight solo and one for loss.

“I felt like I had to step up and be that guy to do it.”Golden said it’s hard being a young team when teams like MI have a lot more depth.”It definitely is tough when we’re switching, and guys are in and out of the game”, Golden said”. “We saw a big opportunity to be able to slash in the run game”.

It was the worst-case scenario for Penn State’s defense in a 49-10 loss to MI on Saturday. And looking ahead to the rest of the season, there is a lot more field to cover.

Brooke Birosik scored a mere 36 seconds into the game, the first of her two goals, to put the Nittany Lions (9-1, 2-1 Big Ten) ahead early.
