Michigan Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson to retire
He didn’t see any defensive snaps the next week, then was waived and came to Oakland.

Woodson, who turned 39 in October, announced Monday (Dec. 21) that he will retire at the end of this season.
It’s the first time in four years the Raiders will send multiple players to the NFL’s annual all-star game, which will be played January 31 in Honolulu.
Woodson is one of the most accomplished defensive backs to play the game, ranking fifth all-time with 65 interceptions and tied for first with Rod Woodson and Darren Sharper with 13 defensive touchdowns.
He will join teammates FB Marcel Reece, and S Charles Woodson as the Raiders other Pro Bowl selections. It has been an honor to have worked alongside Charles for so many years and have the confidence to call him what he truly is: “the G.O.A.T. He is, without a doubt, the embodiment of what it means to be a Raider”.
Rodgers has been a must-start this entire season, even though he has had some bad fantasy games. They were playing at home, in front of a frenzied Raider Nation! – that would have loved nothing more then to stick it to the cheese head fans who had the audacity to infiltrate their hallowed ground.
Raiders safety Charles Woodson is on the home stretch of his illustrious 18-year career. And, as Peter King of Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback pointed out, Woodson also is the only National Football League player ever to have at least 50 interceptions and 20 sacks.
Raiders coach Jack Del Rio and his defense is happy to be the beneficiary of Washington’s decision. “I woke up that morning and for whatever reason, I knew it. It was weird, actually, but I knew it at that point in time that this was going to be it”, he said. But mentally, it’s not there.
That didn’t quite happen, of course, with the Raiders at 6-8 heading into their final two games of the season, starting with Thursday’s Christmas Eve matchup with the Chargers at O.co Coliseum. “It’s the only way you’re able to play as long as I have, is to go out there and perform and to be performing at the level I have this year, it just makes it all that much better”. “It will be a pretty emotional day”.
He was awarded the Heisman Trophy as the top college player while at MI in 1997.

He began his career with Oakland in 1998 after being the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft that year. He helped revive the Raiders and lead them to three straight playoff berths capped by an AFC championship in the 2002 season. He is a Pro Bowler in his second National Football League season. He simply grew up, and when Woodson returned following the 2012 season after the Packers declined to pay him $9 million in salary, he was married and the father of two boys. He arrived for a free-agent visit only to be greeted by fans begging him to come back. However, as I’ve said – if the Raiders were going to have any real change of wining this contest they were going to need to put that “Commitment To Excellence” on display today. “That was really cool”. A concussion on the first day of training camp kept him out most of the preseason this year, forcing him to start the season on the practice squad before being signed to the active roster a month in.
