Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has moved into second place in the CBS News/New York Times poll. Carson said he would be humble enough as president to bring together the finest minds in the country to address problems.

Carson said it was all too easy for Islamic militants to take advantage of the relaxed standards for refugees.

When asked on how serious they supported Republican candidates for president, 61 percent of registered Republican voters said they supported Carson. But he stumbled on the debate stage, finished fifth in Iowa and dropped out of the race.

Carson called a truce, and apologized. Support of Trump and Carson is partly based on a protest mentality.

Among Democrats, uneasiness with Hillary Rodham Clinton is growing and creating a possible opening for Vice President Joe Biden, as he considers making a late entry to seek the party’s nomination. In stark contrast to Trump, Carson is unfailingly courteous, and he is very popular among Christian evangelicals. It is selling ball caps, lithographs of Carson, an abridged version of his book “Gifted Hands, and is using his campaign bus to raise money by listing names of children whose parents pay for it with a $50 donation”. Carson told CNN’s John Berman on “The Lead”.

Aides to Carson did not respond to interview requests from The Baltimore Sun.

The WBUR survey is also reflective of Republican voters across the nation who are tired of career politicians and would rather elect someone who’s worked outside of Washington.

When Trump and Bush were matched against each other, 47 percent of Republican voters selected Trump compared to 32 percent who chose Bush.
