Michigan Primary Elections Offer Few Competitive Races
U.S. Rep. John Conyers, the longest-serving member of the U.S. House, defeated Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey in the heavily Democratic 13th District. Tom Casperson and former Sen.

Moss of Southfield is a family law attorney and has not previously held elective office.
Lawrence was Southfield’s mayor from 2001 until winning the 14th District seat two years ago.
Forty-two of the 110 seats in the Michigan House are open because of term limits, a departure and the recent death of a lawmaker.
Leaving a Traverse City polling station during Tuesday’s primary, 78-year-old retiree Gordon Crimmins said he voted for Bergman because of his military record.
Johnson says they’ll be going on the campaign trail, visiting cities all across Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula at various town halls.
Retired city police chief Ralph Soffredine said he voted for Allen but was unhappy with the squabbling between him and Casperson.
“It’s crappy, the way they took pot shots at each other”, Soffredine said, adding that he planned to vote for Democrat Jerry Cannon if he won his party’s nomination.
Monday is the deadline to register to vote in the August 30 primary election for state and local offices.
In 2014, Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency made a plea to voters: Schools across the county – including Detroit Public Schools – were struggling, still reeling from the economic woes of the 2008 crash. Because of the way Michigan’s schools are funded, individual districts can’t put operating millages on the ballot; such a proposal must be made countywide. And a one-room schoolhouse in Oneida Township, near Lansing, is asking voters for more money.
Statewide voter turnout for the primary is likely to be low. There are no gubernatorial or U.S. Senate candidates on the ballot for the first time in a dozen years.
Two open U.S. House races topped Tuesday’s primary election in MI, where voters in the northern-most district set the stage for a competitive general election and those in the Republican-leaning Thumb region essentially chose their next congressman.
The race was called Tuesday night for Lon Johnson. The Republican victor of a Thumb-area contest should have a clear path to Congress. It’s a similar situation in Ottawa County where two Republicans are running to fill a seat left vacant by retirement. In the general election, Banks will face Republican William Broman.
In the 72nd District, which covers part of Kent and Allegan counties, five Republicans and two Democrats want to be the nominees to replace term-limited Rep. Ken Yonker.
