Michigan regulator resigns amid Flint’s lead-in-water crisis
The e-mails showed that DEQ district coordinator Stephen Busch told the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in February that Flint had “an optimized corrosion control program” to prevent lead from getting into the water system when, in fact, the city had no corrosion control program at all. Exposure to lead can cause behavior problems and learning disabilities in children. “And I want all MI citizens to know that we will learn from this experience, because Flint is not the only city that has an aging infrastructure”, he wrote. After all, it was the governor who appointed the all-powerful emergency manager who approved the deal allowing for Flint’s population to drink poisoned water to save money.

“I know many Flint citizens are angry and want more than an apology”.
The problem came to light after researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute found evidence that city water contained high lead levels (202 DEN A-13, 10/20/15).
In a preliminary report released Monday, Michigan’s auditor general said state regulators should have required Flint to treat its corrosive drinking water to keep lead from leaching from service lines into people’s homes but did not purposely mislead federal officials about the lack of corrosion control. “If these personnel moves and change in tone lead to a more aggressive response and resources to improve public health, then we are finally making progress”, said Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, a Democrat from Flint.
“I have greatly appreciated my time as Communications Director at the DEQ, but I am looking forward to pursuing new opportunities in the new year”.
