Health officials with the Angelina County and Cities Health District as well as their partners are preparing for the possibility of the fast-spreading Zika Virus.
All of Florida’s 32 cases of the Zika virus were acquired outside the state, the health department said.
State officials say they have confirmed the first case of Zika virus in a MI resident.
Governor Rick Scott has now requested the Center for Disease Control send 250 additional Zika antibody tests to Florida.
Three pregnant women in Florida have tested positive for the Zika virus after returning from Zika-affected countries, the state health department announced on Wednesday. But the STD thing really hit our radars earlier this month when a woman in Texas contracted the virus after having sex with a partner who had been traveling in a Zika infected area. Symptoms typically begin two to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
The head of the World Health Organisation has warned that the fight against Zika, a mosquito-transmitted virus linked to serious birth defects, will be long and complex.
Even so, experts expect at least some babies could be born in the United States with microcephaly because of Zika.
“At this time, there is no evidence that women can transmit Zika virus to their sex partners; however, more research is needed to understand this issue”, the CDC statement said.
Of people infected with the Zika virus, 80 percent do not have any symptoms. Because there now is no vaccine or treatment for Zika virus, the best way to avoid Zika virus infection is to prevent mosquito bites. Symptoms include fever, rash, pink eye (conjunctivitis), and joint aches. Genetics might play a role, for example, or perhaps the mothers of babies with microcephaly had another infection in addition to Zika during or prior to pregnancy.
