Michigan Win Rescues Bernie Sanders Campaign Ahead of Key Primaries

Both candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president said definitively on Wednesday that they will not deport children if elected.

In stark contrast, Republican candidates all say they want no such track to citizenship.

Donald Trump won the Michigan Republican primary. “He bet big there, and he pulled it out after a hard fight, but still ended up behind in the delegate race”, he said. He had targeted Clinton’s past support for trade policies like NAFTA and the Obama administration’s Trans-Pacific Partnership, saying that trade pacts kill the kinds of manufacturing jobs that many Michiganders have. “I think Senator Sanders has continued to look backwards and talk about the past in terms of economic policy”, said Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager.

“Every single person who has attacked me has gone down”, Trump said at one of his Florida resorts.

Sanders also slammed Trump for the “vulgar, absurd idea”, of rounding up undocumented migrants and deporting them. It seems odd that after all these debates, the Democratic front-runners are giving each other a pass on the issues where Republicans see weakness but are more than willing to lash out at each other over the areas where they agree. “He is wrong on this issue of deportation. He’s spoken a lot against Islamophobia and made me feel comfortable to vote for him”.

During the debate, both Clinton and Sanders tussled over their past support for immigration reform.

Sanders hit back by again tying Clinton to Wall Street. At the time, Sanders also argued that increased numbers of guest workers would depress wages for Americans.

Sanders said he was against USA invading Cuba and back the overthrow of the governments of Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook sought to squash any momentum Sanders hoped to harness from his unexpected win in a phone call with reporters Wednesday afternoon.

“Leading up to Tuesday’s primary vote, Clinton led in a poll of likely Democratic primary voters by more than 50 percentage points over her rival, Vermont Sen”.

When Clinton and Sanders met in Flint, Mich., on Sunday ahead of that state’s primary, polls showed Clinton poised to score a big victory – big enough it could have put the race all but out of reach for Sanders.

But Sanders has shown remarkable resilience and the intensity of the debate suggested Clinton was taking his challenge seriously.

“This is a marathon”, Clinton acknowledged. At least 8 in 10 in each party’s primary said they were anxious about where the American economy is heading, according to exit polls conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press and television networks.

“Well, first Karen, obviously it’s painful for me to hear that”, she said. The audience let out a collective “Oooh” when Ramos asked if she would drop out should the Justice Department indict her.

“Oh for goodness, that is not going to happen”, Clinton said at the Univision debate in Miami that is being simulcast on CNN.

“The Republicans marshaled the votes against it”, she said of that program.

For Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Tuesday marked the latest in a series of disappointing nights.

With his campaign appearing to be on the verge of fizzling, he was reflective when he spoke to MSNBC, saying he was “not entirely proud” of stooping to using dirty jokes or mocking Trump’s appearance in recent weeks.

“I can make that promise”, he said. She won that state with 83% of the vote. Trump leads polls in those battlegrounds and he made clear he aims to snag them both.

“There’s going to be no reluctance on his part” if Clinton wins, Sanders’ chief strategist, Tad Devine, told me.

The braggadocious Trump’s caustic style has angered some voters – and fellow Republicans – but he insisted on Tuesday he could draw millions more to his movement. When asked how she’d describe Trump’s character, she quickly responded, “It’s un-American”.
