Mickelson’s British Open hopes end on hotel balcony

An off-target shot by Phil Mickelson during the final round of the The Open Championship on Monday at St. Andrews in Scotland turned into a souvenir for one hotel guest.

Mickelson’s Callaway ball, complete with his markings, took a while to come to rest, bouncing around on the Old Course Hotel balcony.

At St. Andrews, the famous course playing host to the Open this year, 17 is called the “Road Hole” due to its proximity to, you guessed it, a road.

Phil Mickelson was swinging through the British Open, doing what Phil Mickelson does, which is to say putting together an astonishing last-ditch run at a major.

Schniederjans is now within two strokes of fellow amateur Paul Dunne, Australian Jason Day and South African Louis Oosthuizen who share the lead on 12 under and will tee-off later in the day.

Mickelson’s card until then had been without a blip – six birdies and 10 pars as he raced through the field into a tie for fifth.

Hotels play a big role in the lives of professional golfers.
