Vanuatu may still be eliminated from Pool A if Tahiti and Fiji draw their match at 14:00 on Tuesday, but a win for either side would see them through. They’ve just been beaten 46-0 by Vanuatu. “This is a development squad and I’m looking for the next two Pacific Games before we’re competitive – but the makings are there”.

“Most of these have never been out of their villages let alone on to another island”.

However, in a lesson for the young Micronesians, the Samoans ignored jibes about being the worst team in history and eventually recorded their first win in 2011 against Tonga.

Micronesia’s Australian coach Stan Foster admitted it was boys against men after the Vanuatu debacle and called on Federation Internationale de Football Association to recognise Micronesia. We had a benchmark set by Tahiti and as we’re playing them next we didn’t have any other options. “I didn’t want anybody just dropping their heads and walking away from the game without putting an effort in”, Foster said.

“Hero” of the night was Jean Kaltack who top scored with 16 goals, and got to take home five match balls as a result (maybe).

“I just wanted the guys to keep fighting all the way through the game so they knew that when they came off they tried their hardest”.

Journalist Kevin Darling, reporting from the tournament, told Sky News the team were trying their best.

“They’re boys, not men”, Foster said of his team.

The match of course also gives Micronesia the heartbreaking record of the worst loss in global soccer.
