Microsoft can also encourage app makers to write more software for Windows 10 if a lot of people are using it. It’s similar to how Apple pushes its users to upgrade to the latest iPhone and Mac systems.

“We don’t yet know whether it’ll be a clear opt-out or whether it will be like the most recent nagware offering ‘Upgrade Now” or “Upgrade Tonight” with the tiniest option to get out that you ever did see.
“I had every intention of upgrading to Windows 10, but at this point I think I’m dragging my feet out of spite because of the way that Microsoft is conducting themselves”, wrote one user on Reddit’s Windows 10 subreddit.
Even though Windows 10 is a recommended update, it is not a required update. Users who are still using Windows 7 and 8.1 are now being encouraged to move to the latest operating system.
“Depending upon your Windows Update settings, this may cause the upgrade process to automatically initiate on your device”, according to Microsoft’s Windows blog.

If your devices are still running on Windows 7 or 8.1, you may still give this OS a go at no cost until July 29. Plus the 30 day window for reverting back to your previous version of Windows will still be available if you decide to go ahead with the upgrade and try it out. For a refresh, as of 2014, Microsoft had sold around 200 million licenses of Windows 8, while Windows 7 was estimated to have more than 600 million installs.
In theory, there’s really nothing wrong with moving to Windows 10. Shortly before that announcement the free upgrade was accidently pushed to some users as an update that was automatically installed.
Windows 7 and 8.1 machines sold to home users are generally configured to automatically install these “recommended” updates.

Notably, with all those Windows 7 users yet to make the jump, this number will likely increase within the next few months.
