Microsoft Announces Skype Updates, Adds Office Offline Extension to Chrome

The Redmond-based tech giant is focused on improving the experience of those using its services on platforms other than Windows; among them, iOS, Android as well as Mac.

Keep in mind that Microsoft Office apps for Android are available as separated downloads on Google Play Store, and they’re free to use. For those of you who are not aware, this new Office 365 E5 SKU will come with Skype for Business (Lync) with support for features including Cloud PBX and Meeting Broadcast; new analytics features including Power BI Pro and Delve Organizational Analytics; and new advanced security features including eDiscovery, Customer Lockbox, Data Loss Protection and Safe Attachments.

Microsoft also added an enhanced Navigation pane to help users work with large documents within Word Online, along a number of formatting improvements with Excel Online and made performance improvements to PowerPoint Online.

Microsoft’s latest update also reduced the Office apps footprint by 40 percent on Android, and with time the apps will become even lighter. Additionally, the Office apps are also now enterprise-ready with Android M support for Enterprise and compliant with Android for Work.

Price for the new Office 365 E5 will still not be released yet according to a spokesperson interviewed by ZDNet but the price will of course be announced once it comes out on December 1. This mode will let you see the speaker notes on a PowerPoint presentation using an Android device.

As far as Mac is concerned, the Visual Basic Editor capabilities have been stepped up, but with respect to the feedback provided by customers. The Project Viewer now supports Add Modules. Instead, Microsoft confirmed that the update contains major improvements that were requested by Outlook users.

Skype’s new update also provides audio and video integration for online versions of MS Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint.

Microsoft has announced that it is planning Skype integration directly into Office Online and Outlook.com which will allow the users to communicate by voice and video with their contacts while working on a document.

These new features would certainly improve the user experience on Android.
