Microsoft Claims Edge Browser Is Far Better than Chrome for Battery Life

The tech industry has no shortage of heated battles.

Microsoft started the campaign to push Edge as a power-efficient browser in June, saying in part: “Using a power efficient browser is one of the best ways to get more out of your PC or tablet – whether you’re checking email, shopping online, playing games, or watching movies”.

The results revealed that Microsoft Edge beats Chrome by more than an hour and outlasted by 62 percent – more than five hours – when compared with Firefox.

In a recent blog post, Microsoft tested Edge and Chrome battery life on Surface Book by running their latest versions.

According to the company, the test showed that Microsoft Edge lasted 23 percent longer than Opera, 45 percent longer than Google Chrome and 69 percent longer than Mozilla Firefox.

When Google countered the claim, it only compared Chrome to Edge, showing a difference of more than two hours – 10 hours 39 minutes v eight hours 27 minutes.

Another test, meanwhile, measures the power usage in the CPU, GPU and Wi-Fi chip in simple browsing scenarios, and it seems that Microsoft Edge comes out on top again.

Venturebeat reported that Google released the latest iteration of its web browser Chrome 53.

Microsoft said the improved efficiency of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update reflects a number of enhancements across the operating system, including improved background tab efficiency, more efficient Flash, improvements to the app frame itself and improved networking. After releasing Chrome 53, Google also claimed that its browser is consuming less battery than before. “These numbers are from actual Windows 10 (version 1607) devices used in the real world, not artificial tests or hypotheses”.

The company also open-sourced its lab test on GitHub and published the full methodology for its video tests, so anyone-including the competition-can reproduce them. And the results pretty much speak for themselves: Edge lasted for more than 13 hours, according to Microsoft, and managed to beat Chrome by approximately one hour. “Regardless of which test you choose, the conclusion is the same: Microsoft Edge lets you browse and watch longer, so you can get more out of your devices without worrying about finding an outlet”, Weber said.
